NC BioConnect is a non-profit regional exchange group whose mission is to foster and promote interaction between academia, industry and government agencies involved in the life sciences and biotechnology in and around Charotte, NC. In conjunction with the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, we have developed an on-line forum where individuals, businesses, universities and government agencies not only in Charlotte, but throughout the state can begin to expand their current networks,strengthen partnerships between each other, and explore new opportunities for collaboration and engagement.
We are primarily funded through the North Carolina Biotechnology Center’sRegional Exchange Grant program. Additional financial and in-kind support comes from our sponsors and partners. NC Bioconnect Charlotte currently serves the following sixteen counties in North Carolina: Alexander, Anson, Cabarrus, Catawba, Chester, Chesterfield, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lancaster, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanley, Union, York by providing regular networking opportunities through the region. Chair: Scott Ferguson, MSc
Scott Ferguson, a native of Charlotte, serves as the Chairman for NC BioConnect
Scott is currently Regional Sales Manager at groninger, a provider of fill-finish equipment to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Prior to groninger, he held a Strategic Account Manager position at Harlan Laboratories (Harlan Sprague Dawley, Inc.), a worldwide provider of pre-clinical research tools & services to biotechnology, pharmaceutical, agrochemical, industrial chemical & food industries; served as Regional Manager at Hyde Engineering (formerly JM Hyde) providing biopharmaceutical process systems planning, design, validation, project management, and compliance services. Scott has extensive knowledge in GMP facility design, start-up, commissioning and qualification for clinical and commercial biopharmaceutical manufacturing operations and worked with numerous pharmaceutical & biotechnology companies, academic institutions, & government entities.
Scott holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology and a minor in Business Administration from North Carolina State University, as well as a Master’s of Science in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University.
Vice Chair: Sheetal Ghelani, PhD
Sheetal Ghelani serves as the Vice Chair for NC BioConnect
Sheetal is currently the Business Development Manager at the David H. Murdock Research Institute, a nonprofit foundation focused with providing scientific capabilities and resources to researchers at the North Carolina Research Campus and beyond. In the past, Sheetal served as Business Development Associate at the North Carolina Research Campus as well as part-time faculty in the Department of Biology at UNC Charlotte. Prior to moving to the Charlotte region, Sheetal was a postdoctoral researcher at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, where she was recipient of the Ruth L. Kirschstein NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship. Sheetal has worked as an intern at the National Disease Research Interchange and the Medical College of Georgia’s Office of Technology Transfer.
Sheetal has a B.S. in Applied Biology and minors in Biochemistry and Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the Georgia Instutute of Technology. She also has a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Microbiology with a focus in developmental and clinical immunology.
Secretary: Jennifer Montague, PhD
Jennifer Montague serves as Secretary of NC BioConnect
Jennifer has over a decade of business and managerial experience with both small start-up companies as well as large pharmaceutical firms. Prior to joining Biocytics™, she was an independent consultant for biotech companies, as well as a Co-Founder of the Nevada Biotechnology & Bioscience Consortium. Jennifer also served as Senior Scientific Director for an investment bank that specialized in life science companies. Additionally, she was Site Manager for Merck Research Laboratories in La Jolla, CA.
Jennifer also served as a Manager for a start-up medical health business in Las Vegas. She completed her graduate work in apoptosis at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she investigated a potential apoptotic nuclease isolated from T cells in the thymus. Following her time at graduate school, she was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellow as a post-doctoral fellow at Duke University.
